Now let’s get down to business! We’ll begin with a sketch of the garden, including the location of the trellis and teepee, and note any special characteristics. Then we’ll pencil in the crops. We’ll use a basic layout, but remember, feel free to use your imagination when you create your design!

(Garden measures 10’ x 20’ -- each square represents 2’ x 2’)

Successive sowings of lettuce. The bed in the foreground is ready to harvest.

Factors we considered in making this plan:

  • The peas will have gone by before the cucumbers get large enough to shade them.
  • By sowing lettuce every two weeks, we’ll have a continuous supply.
  • We’ll sow more peas for a fall crop on the north side of the trellis. The cucumbers will provide some shade for the cool-weather peas.
