Planting & Transplanting FAQ #1:

I’m very careful about spacing my seeds, but even so my beets always come up looking crowded. How can this be?

Answer:

Each beet "seed" is actually a tiny fruit cluster containing several embryos, and each cluster can produce three to five seedlings. That's why no matter how carefully you space your seeds when planting, you'll get many seedlings growing next to each other and you’ll need to thin them.
