Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Planting FAQ #3:

I work all week. And the weekends have been too hot, sunny, and windy to transplant. What can I do?!

Answer:

This is a dilemma for many gardeners who must work their gardening around their other responsibilities. Try to avoid the hottest part of the day; instead transplant in late afternoon or evening. You can set up small windbreaks around the transplants by poking evergreen branches, pieces of wood such as shingles, or anything else that will break the wind. You can also set up some hoops, and cover the new bed with shade cloth, available from greenhouse suppliers. Some gardeners even create miniature "lath houses" -- small structures made from wooden frames and evenly spaced lath as a roof. These provide shade for new transplants, and they can be moved about the garden to help shade summer sowings of cool weather crops like lettuce.
