South Burlington, VT (January 4, 2011) - The National Gardening Association and Subaru of America, Inc. have announced their 2010 Healthy Sprouts Award Winners. Over 800 applications were received from worthy programs across the United States, each one committed to teaching children about health, nutrition, combating hunger and becoming environmental stewards within a garden setting.
The Subaru Healthy Sprouts Program addresses the critical need for students to learn healthy lifestyle choices through hands-on activities in the garden. Edible gardens give children the opportunity to draw connections from farm to table and directly learn how food is grown. "Through the Subaru Healthy Sprouts Program children are given the tools to grow, maintain, and harvest whole foods to share with their classmates, teachers, families, and the surrounding community," said Mike Metallo, President and CEO of National Gardening Association. "We are delighted to work with Subaru of America to help more young people live healthier lives."
The winning programs will receive a $500 Gift Certificate to the Gardening with Kids Catalog, NGA's Eat a Rainbow Kit and an NGA literature package. This package will provide these programs with the necessary tools to either start or continue to engage children and build their knowledge in the garden.
